The ACEs research has established, across studies involving hundreds of thousands of participants, that childhood adversity directly increases risk for virtually every major chronic disease. With an ACE score of 4 or more, risk for diabetes increases 1.6-fold, cancer and heart disease double, and chronic lung disease quadruples (Felitti et al., 1998). For every single-point increase in ACE score, autoimmune disease risk rises 20%. An ACE score of just 2 increases autoimmune hospitalization risk by 70–80% (Dube et al., 2009). The mechanism is not behavioral. It is biological. Childhood stress programs macrophages — a type of white blood cell — for a pro-inflammatory tendency that persists regardless of adult stress levels. People with stressful childhoods showed elevated systemic inflammation as adults up to twenty years later, independent of their adult experiences (Danese et al., 2011). The childhood programming of the immune system is not overwritten by a calm adult life or an impeccable diet. It must be actively counteracted — through exercise that reduces inflammatory markers, contemplative practice that normalizes cortisol, and ongoing monitoring that tracks whether the interventions are working.

Diana's marathon running was doing more than she knew — it was fighting the inflammatory programming at the cellular level. But without measurement, she had no way to know whether her practice was sufficient or whether the old programming was gaining ground.

SportsFlow's Coherence Score (HRV) is the most accessible proxy for systemic inflammatory load — low HRV correlates with elevated CRP and IL-6. The exercise physiology tracking documents whether training is producing the anti-inflammatory effects the research predicts. The Zen Score tracks cortisol-related regulation. For people like Diana, SportsFlow transforms exercise from a lifestyle choice into a monitored medical intervention — providing the data that shows whether the childhood programming is being actively reversed or merely masked by a healthy exterior.
