§01 — Where the feeling lives

The race is the smallest part of the year

Ask a rower why the sport is emotional and you will hear about a race. A race is six minutes, a few times a year. The rest of it is the sport.

A rowing life moves in a cycle. Each turn of it asks something different, and each one has been studied by people who mostly do not read each other. The dark morning has been studied as ritual and synchrony. The long aerobic middle as absorption. Selection as evaluative threat. The race as what happens to feeling at intensities the body cannot hold. The years after as mood, identity and recovery.

Set them end to end and the shape shows. The race is the loudest part of the year and the least representative one.

The same is true of a concert in a musician's life. That is why music walks alongside this document throughout. The two lives are built out of the same materials. They differ in one place.

§02 — The dark morning

The machine was never the problem

Rowers talk about the erg as if it were a colder sport. The cold is not in the machine.

In 2009 four researchers at Oxford tested twelve men from the university squad. Each man rowed forty-five minutes twice. Once alone. Once as one of six on ergometers, set up as a virtual boat, holding the same rate. Power output was matched and checked, so nobody could be said to have simply worked harder. Afterward a cuff was inflated on the arm until pressure became pain, which is the standard indirect reading of endorphin release.

Alone, the threshold rose about 5.6 mmHg. Together, about 11.0.

Same machine. Same watts. Twice the response.

It happened in a gym. Not on water. Six men on ergs facing a wall, the way every winter morning goes. The study gets cited as evidence for the magic of the boat. It is evidence about company.

An erg is not hard because it is a machine. It is hard because you are alone with a number nobody else has to carry.

The same group proposed this for laughter, for singing together, for dancing. Later work found the brain rhythms of two guitarists locking into phase while they played. Rowing in a crew and playing in a section appear to be the same event.

One part of the morning has never been measured. You do not get up at half past four because you want to. You get up because seven other people lose their row if you do not. It is a strong and durable thing and it appears in none of the standard motivation inventories.

§03 — The steady state

Swing is real, and it is not in the race

The best-feeling rowing and the most important rowing are two different experiences. You have known that for years without saying it.

Flow research leaned on musicians from the start, because an instrument gives you what the state needs. A clear task. Feedback with every note. Difficulty you set yourself. Rowing gives the same, mostly in the long aerobic middle of the year, which is the part nobody photographs.

The work here is careful. Researchers put rowers' moment-to-moment accounts alongside oar-force and oar-angle measurement in coxless pairs. The strokes rowers felt as good and the strokes they felt as bad had different mechanical signatures, in the body, in the pair, and in the boat. The feel of a boat running is not a story rowers tell themselves afterward. Instruments can see it.

Music has the same state and a scan of it. Limb and Braun watched jazz pianists improvise, then play memorized lines. Improvising, the self-monitoring regions of the prefrontal cortex went quiet while a medial region came forward. The critic steps back and the voice steps up. Later work has been mixed. One guitar study did not reproduce it, and that belongs next to the finding rather than after it.

Then the two lives part. A musician's most absorbed hour can also be the most consequential one. A rower's cannot. Absorption asks for a balance between what is demanded and what you can do, and for a quiet self-monitor. Six minutes at race pace gives neither.

What most rowers love about rowing is not available in the event rowing is organized around.

§04 — The race

Where the mind stops getting a vote

Panteleimon Ekkekakis' dual-mode theory is the most useful idea in this literature. Below the ventilatory threshold, how work feels is shaped largely by the mind. What you believe you can do. Where you put your attention. What you decided this was for. People differ widely there, and most of them feel good. Above that threshold the signals coming up from the body take over. Ventilation, acid, heat. Feeling falls, and it falls for nearly everyone.

A two-thousand-meter race sits above that line for nearly all of its length. That is the explanation for what rowers say about the event. Rowers are not more dramatic than other athletes. They compete almost entirely in the one place where mental technique has the least purchase. Reappraisal, self-talk, attention control. All of them work best exactly where the 2k is not.

The numbers agree. College rowers finish a 2k reporting 19.3 on a twenty-point scale of exertion, with a standard deviation under one point, and blood lactate near 15 mmol/L. The small deviation is the finding. Whatever else differs between rowers, the last minute does not. What differs is what they can stand.

This is where the two lives separate. A concert's feeling is made. Two violinists can have opposite experiences of the same twenty minutes, built out of preparation and interpretation and what each decided the piece was about. Two rowers cannot have opposite experiences of the last five hundred meters.

The musician builds the feeling. The rower is handed it.

So the work belongs earlier. The plan, the split, the one sentence you will say to yourself at twelve hundred meters. Settled before the door closes. Anything that needs deciding at twelve hundred meters will not happen.

§05 — The lineup on the wall

Selection is harder than racing

You know this one. The lineup goes up and you find your name before you read anything else.

A race is hard and then it is over. Selection is hard and then it is Tuesday. Ask rowers to name the worst part of the sport and most of them do not say the last five hundred meters. They say the seat race. Or the week before boatings. Or an erg score posted where everybody can read it.

The body has a largest stress response and it is not saved for the hardest work. Sally Dickerson and Margaret Kemeny went through two hundred and eight laboratory studies of acute stress to find out what sets it off. Difficulty by itself does not. Two things do, and they have to be present together.

Your performance can be judged badly by other people. And you cannot control how it turns out.

Both together produced large cortisol responses, an effect size near 0.93, and the slowest return to normal. Neither one present, and the hormone barely moved at all.

Nobody built seat racing to do this. It does it anyway. Every ingredient is there, and the missing control is not a flaw in the method. It is the method. You are being measured by what a boat does with you in it, and there are seven other people in the boat.

This is also why rowers who hate the erg call it the cleaner event.

§06 — Two climates

The trouble is at the seam

There is a second thing going on under selection. It has a name too, and once you see it a good deal of boathouse weather reads plainly.

Researchers who work on achievement goals separate two kinds of environment. In a task-involving climate, what gets noticed is improvement, effort and mastery. You against last winter. In an ego-involving climate, what gets noticed is competition between people, comparison, and public judgment. You against the man next to you.

The findings are steady. Athletes who see an ego-involving climate report more anxiety, more fear of failure, more self-handicapping, more exhaustion, and self-worth that rises and falls with the last result. Athletes in task-involving climates report more enjoyment and less anxiety and boredom. The intervention effects are small. They point the same way every time.

Now read that against a rowing program. The training is task-involving by its nature. The winter is a man against his own body, measured in meters. The selection is ego-involving by design. Competition between people, comparison and public judgment is not a criticism of seat racing. It is a description of it.

A boathouse runs two climates at once, and most of the trouble in it lives at the seam.

Let selection leak backward into an ordinary Tuesday in January and the whole year becomes an audition. Keep them apart and a squad can train freely and be measured honestly, which is what everybody wanted.

When the answer is no, it lands harder than people outside the sport expect. Ninety-one academy soccer players, fifteen to eighteen years old, filled out a standard distress screen before selection, a week after, and three weeks after. The ones who were released scored higher than the ones who were kept, at both points afterward, and a sizable share crossed the clinical line. In one reading of the same data, more than half were still over it three weeks on.

They were teenagers waiting to hear about a team. So are a great many rowers waiting on a lineup.

I could find no peer-reviewed work on seat racing itself. That is worth saying rather than filling in with findings borrowed from somewhere else.

§07 — Which feelings move the boat

The useful ones are not the calm ones

The experiments here are few and they agree about direction. They say something most rowers have felt and few have been told outright.

Rathschlag and Memmert had people generate happiness, anger, anxiety, sadness or nothing at all, then measured finger force, jump height and throwing speed. Anger and happiness beat neutral every time. In two of the three they also beat anxiety and sadness. Woodman and colleagues found the same with finer grain. Anger raised peak muscular force. Hope shortened reaction time.

So emotions are not one substance arriving in different amounts. They do different jobs, and the job depends on what the moment needs. Force, or timing, or patience.

And a calm rower is not necessarily a fast one.

Anxiety needs its own line, because it is the one rowers ask about. What matters is less how much of it there is than how it gets read. The same arousal helps or hurts depending on whether you take it as readiness or as threat. Which is why "calm down" is poor coaching on a start line and "this is your body getting ready" is good coaching.

The arousal is not the problem. It is also not going anywhere.

And there is no one correct state. One rower needs quiet and another needs an argument, and both are right about themselves. The work is learning your own, not borrowing somebody else's.

§08 — Handling it

Five places to put your hand

Emotional regulation is a clinical phrase for five ordinary moves. You use most of them already.

James Gross laid them out in the order a feeling happens. The situation arrives. You attend to part of it. You make something of what you attended to. Then it shows on your face and in your body. You can step in at any of those points. The earlier you step in, the less it costs.

The last row is where the evidence gets sharp. Wagstaff put twenty competitive athletes through a ten-kilometer cycling time trial three times. Once after watching an upsetting film with instructions to conceal their reaction. Once after watching it with no instruction. Once without the film.

After suppressing, they were slower. Lower mean power. Lower peak heart rate. And they rated the work as harder while doing less of it.

Holding a feeling down costs watts.

Rowing prizes the flat face and the unbothered walk down the dock. Some of that is discipline and worth keeping. Some of it is twenty minutes of suppression before a hard piece, and it gets paid for at the catch.

Two bodies at the same start line

Two rowers with the same nerves can have opposite mornings. Researchers describe two states people enter before something that matters. They are not moods. You can see them in the circulation.

In a challenge state the heart works harder and the blood vessels open. More blood reaches the brain and the muscles. Fuel is released and used well. In a threat state the heart works a little harder, the vessels tighten, cortisol rises, and less gets delivered.

What decides which one arrives is not how nervous you are. It is three questions you answer without noticing.

So the useful question before a piece is not whether you are nervous. You are nervous, and you were always going to be. The useful questions are whether you believe you can do this, whether you have any say in it, and whether you are going toward something or away from it.

Notice where a seat race sits in that. It goes straight at the second question. A rower can believe in himself completely and still find no say anywhere in the situation, which is the arrangement that produces a threat state.

A coach who wants challenge instead of threat on a selection morning has one honest lever. Give some of the say back. Name the criteria in advance. Race more than one piece. Tell them what happens next either way.

§09 — The season and the years after

Mood moves first

The most useful finding in this whole area is also the oldest. Morgan and colleagues showed that mood disturbance, meaning fatigue and tension rising and vigor falling, tracks training load. It shows up before performance drops and before most physiological markers move. Rowing has been near the center of that work since it started.

Kellmann followed the German junior squad through a six-week camp and a World Championships. Load went up, stress rose and recovery fell. Load came down, both reversed. Mood, creatine kinase and ergometer scores moved together through the cycle.

Mood is not a soft measure in this sport. It is the earliest one.

Music's version of this is a caution. A national survey asked orchestral players what they did about performance anxiety. Better than a quarter said propranolol, most of them without a prescription. Both cultures have chosen to absorb the load or medicate it rather than measure it. Rowing already measures everything else.

§10 — What is known and what is not

The load is real. The evidence is thinner than the story.

The synchrony study is twelve men from one squad at one university, read through a blood-pressure cuff. The improvisation imaging has been only partly reproduced. Most of the emotion-and-output experiments use grip and jump, not races. The challenge and threat predictions hold in some studies and not others. And seat racing, the structure rowers find hardest, has no literature at all.

One result from the music side cuts against the romantic reading of everything above. Van Zijl and Luck had performers play three ways. Attending to technique. Attending to expression. Attending to their own feeling after a mood induction. Listeners preferred the expressive playing, over both the technical and the felt. Under the feeling instruction, players moved less, slower, smoother.

Feeling it is not the same as carrying it, and it can get in the way. Eight students, so hold it lightly. It is still a useful correction for a sport that periodically decides intensity of feeling is the point. Emotion has to be aimed at the work.

§11 — What follows

Seven things this asks of a coach

None of it is complicated and none of it is new to anyone who has spent a winter in a boathouse.

OneMove the psychological work earlier. By the time it matters, the door has closed.

§ The takeaway

Rowing carries four loads. Music carries three.

A body with no say in how it feels. Judgment that does not stop, in a currency you do not control. Other people who lose something when you do not come. And a span measured in decades.

Music has the last three, and has them well documented. Auditions, ensembles, a life chosen at fourteen. It does not have the first.

A musician builds the feeling of a performance. A rower is handed the last five hundred meters by his own bloodstream, the same way every time. What is open is what he decided beforehand to do with it.

So the work belongs outside the race. What is inside is what the crew built in the dark, months earlier, with nobody watching.

That is why this document sits underneath the rest of the library rather than beside it. The instruments, the rings, the wellbeing and flow modules all rest on one claim. What an athlete feels is trainable, measurable, and load-bearing. Rowing is the clearest place to see it, because the sport takes away so many of the usual explanations. Same boat. Same watts. Same six minutes.

Two questions are left open. The first is what happens when the judgment is removed. Masters rowing, adult beginners, anyone who came to the sport late and will never be selected for anything. If belonging is doing the work claimed here, those crews should show it plainly. The second is the coxswain, who lives a different life in the same boat and appears nowhere in this literature.

None of this will have told you anything you had not already felt. It gives it a name, which is the part that can be worked on.

Voice — the standing register

This is now the house voice for SportsFlow long-form: the memoir's register, not the field report's and not Dangerous Thoughts'. The changes made in this pass, recorded so the rule can be applied to the next document rather than rediscovered:

What was kept, and why

Six short declaratives are load-bearing and stay: "Same machine. Same watts. Twice the response." · "The erg is hard. The seat race is judged." · "The musician builds the feeling. The rower is handed it." · "Holding a feeling down costs watts." · "Same event. Same nerves. Different plumbing." · "The arousal is not the problem. It is also not going anywhere." These are the same instrument as "Hard was never the problem" and "Shut the feeling off. Get it done." They are statements, not aphorisms, and each one arrives after the evidence rather than instead of it.

The last line — settled

"It gives it a name, which is the part that can be worked on" stays. It was raised as a judgment call and decided in favor of keeping it. A memoir would cut it; a foundation document has a framing duty a memoir does not, and this is the sentence that states what the document is for. No longer an open item.
