The axes

What this joins

Three bodies of work now sit in the library and none of them was built to fit the others. The traditions came first, as a set of rings that has since grown to fourteen. The Weather System came second, as nineteen emotions. Not Two came third, as twelve stations. Each has since drawn its own grid, and the grids do not agree.

The Cross-Reference Matrix maps the emotions against the traditions. Not Two's sixth section maps each station against the traditions, and does something the Weather System never did: it states which rings are absent from a station and why. The Still Water carries that same stated-absence discipline across its twelve stations, which makes it a third source for this work and one that has never been read into a grid.

This document holds them and reads the differences.

3axes, four bodies of work

The last two numbers are the document. Fourteen rings exist and four of them have never been cited in an emotion article, so the material is written and cannot be reached from the index built to reach it.

The finding

Written and unreachable

The Cross-Reference Matrix now carries a column for every ring, which it did not before. Four of those columns are empty: Odyssey, Desert Fathers, Aristotle and Mussar. Forty-eight written articles, no marks anywhere.

Not Two's own grid carries eleven rings and has no catch-all column, because those stations were written against the rings deliberately. The Weather System needs a catch-all, because its emotion articles reach for sources belonging to no ring. Set the two side by side and the difference is not a swap. It is a shortfall in one direction and a surplus in the other.

GridRings coveredEmpty or absent
The Cross-Reference Matrixall 14, plus a catch-all column4 columns empty
Not Two, §VI11, no catch-all3 rings absent
The Still Water, §VIdrawn per station, absences statednever read into a grid

Not Two predates the three new rings, so its eleven columns were complete when it was written and are not now. The Desert Fathers, Aristotle and Mussar rings have no place in it either.

Forty-eight articles exist and cannot be found from the document built to find them. That is not a writing problem. It is a filing problem.

The fix is a citation pass rather than more writing. Every one of the four empty columns is filled by reading the emotion articles and adding the ring where the ring is plainly on the subject. What has to be decided separately is whether the unaffiliated sources in the catch-all column are a ring waiting to be written or a permanent margin. That is a judgment about the shape of the library and it has not been made.

The stations are grouped in three movements: One — The Split Inside (01–04), Two — The Split Outside (05–08), Three — The Undivided (09–12). Four rows are complete: 07, 08, 10 and 12, where every one of the eleven rings is cited. The rest carry the findings recorded at the time of writing and are otherwise awaiting re-extraction.

The roster

The twelve stations

The station grid above is unreadable without knowing what a station is. This is the roster, with the term each one carries and the movement it belongs to.

StationTermThe claim
01 The One Who WatchessākṣinThere is an observer, and the athlete is not it — or is not only it.
02 The Doer Disappearswu weiThe best action does not feel authored. Effort and effortlessness are not opposites.
03 The Body Is Not a MachinekāyaThe instrument metaphor is useful and it is also the source of a specific harm.
04 Practice Is Not PreparationshikantazaThe training ground is not the antechamber to the race. It is where the life is.
05 The Opponent Is Not the EnemyagōnWithout them there is no contest. The word for what they give you is not hostility.
06 Pain Is Not the ProblemduḥkhaEffort-discomfort and injury-pain are different signals and the difference is learnable.
07 The Boat Rows ItselfsaṁghaSomething real happens to a group in time. The canonical case, and the one led by rowing.
08 The Coach and the Athleteguru-śiṣyaTransmission runs through relationship, and closeness is regard rather than access.
09 Winning Is Not the PointniṣkāmaAct without grasping the fruit. The station Homer refuses.
10 Love Is the Word for ItpremaEvery tradition in the library eventually reaches for the word. This one starts there.
11 The Sky and the WeathercitCalm is not one of the nineteen. It is what they move across. The declared join.
12 Chop Wood, Carry WaterbaqāThe practice returns you to the ordinary. Closes on the oar carried inland.

The rings

Twelve, and what each is for

The other axis. Ten of these rings are twelve articles each; the reach column is the count from the emotion grid, which is the only place any of them has been counted.

RingReachWhat it is organized around
Sufi · The Devoted Athlete18 of 19The states of the heart. Counter-pole of love and devotion, and the broadest column in the library.
Stoic13Judgment, and what is up to us. Broad because every weather involves a judgment.
Confucian9Conduct in front of others. Strong wherever the emotion is social.
Buddhist7Craving, impermanence, and the end of suffering. Concentrated rather than thin.
Zen5What happens when you stop naming. Little interest in the taxonomy, great interest in the sitting.
Gītā5Action under dread, and action without grasping the result.
Ubuntu5Personhood through others. Speaks where the weather is belonging or its loss.
Taoist4Non-forcing, and the uselessness that turns out to be use.
Heroic3Glory, mortality, and the name that outlasts you. Under-cited by a wide margin.
Running Road3The long solitary effort. Currently treated as a source about pleasant states, which it is not.
Odyssey · The Long Way Home0Return, and the cost of it. A full column in Not Two, uncited in the Weather System.
Other5Not a ring. Desert fathers, the Greeks, and single sources with no home.
A number worth sitting withTwo rings account for thirty-one of the seventy-seven marks in the emotion grid. Four rings account for nine. The library is not eleven traditions evenly consulted; it is two workhorses and a long tail.

Convergence

Where all eleven arrive together

Four stations draw every ring in the library. They are worth naming because full convergence across eleven traditions separated by two thousand years and four continents is not a thing that happens often, and when it does it is evidence of a different order than any single citation.

StationTermWhat all eleven agree on
07 The Boat Rows ItselfsaṁghaThat something real happens to a group in time together, and that it is not a metaphor.
08 The Coach and the Athleteguru-śiṣyaThat transmission runs through a relationship, and that the relationship carries obligations in both directions.
10 Love Is the Word for ItpremaThat the word is not decoration. Every tradition in the library ends up using it.
12 Chop Wood, Carry WaterbaqāThat the practice returns you to the ordinary rather than removing you from it — with one dissent, below.

Three of these four are about other people. That is the strongest single pattern in the whole corpus and neither grid was built to find it.

Dissent

Presence is not agreement

A mark means a tradition was cited. It does not mean the tradition agrees. Not Two records three places where a ring is present precisely because it argues against the station, and a fourth where it is absent by disagreement rather than by silence. Collapsing those into ordinary marks would be the same error as inventing one.

StationRingThe disagreement
03 The Body Is Not a MachineStoic — absentEpictetus puts the body among the things not up to us. The station cannot be built on that, so the ring is absent by disagreement rather than by silence.
09 Winning Is Not the PointHeroic — dissentFor Homer kleos is exactly the point. This is a genuine dissent and the article says so rather than reaching for a compatible line.
12 Chop Wood, Carry WaterHeroic — dissentThe Iliad never brings Achilles home. A ring built on that poem cannot endorse a station about returning to the ordinary.
01 The One Who WatchespartialStoic prosochē and Confucian shèn dú recommend the watcher where Zen and Taoist want it quiet. They differ on the hour of the day, not on the claim.
Why this is kept visibleA grid that renders dissent and agreement with the same dot reads as consensus. Eleven traditions converging is a finding. Eleven traditions appearing is a table.

Station 01 is the more interesting of the four, because it is the only one where the disagreement dissolves on inspection. Two rings want the watcher awake and two want it quiet, and both are describing the same faculty at different points in a day. That is a distinction the grid cannot hold and the prose has to.

The Odyssey problem

A ring with nowhere to sit

The Odyssey ring exists twice over. It is a twelve-station ring in the Wisdom Library and it is also the spine of The Long Way Home, which is a separate twelve-article series with its own Greek term chips. It has a column in Not Two. It has no marks anywhere in the Weather System.

The consequence is concrete. An athlete reading across a row in the Cross-Reference Matrix for what to do with disappointment will not be pointed at station 04, The Bag of Winds, which is the ring's whole treatment of exactly that. The material exists, is written, and is unreachable from the grid that exists to reach it.

Three ways to close it, in rising cost:

  • Cite it where it already belongs. Add the Odyssey ring to the traditions sections of the emotion articles where the station is plainly on the subject. Cheapest, and it converts a structural gap into an ordinary one.
  • Give the matrix a twelfth column. Honest, but it produces a column that is empty on the day it is drawn, which is a bad look for a document whose argument is that empty columns mean something.
  • Build the station–weather join properly. A third grid, twelve stations against nineteen emotions, in which each station declares which weathers it opens. This is the real answer and it is the most work.
The ring is not missing from the library. It is missing from the index, which for a reader is the same thing.

The open join

Stations against weathers

There is a further grid nobody has drawn, and it is the one a coach would reach for first. The Still Water sorts the work into four phases, detect, interrupt, shift and integrate, and every tradition in the library has something to say about at least one of them. A ring mapped onto those four phases would tell an athlete not only which tradition speaks to their weather but which part of the job it helps with. That grid is the most useful unbuilt thing described in this document and it needs the same citation pass as the rest.

The third grid does not exist yet. Two anchors for it are already fixed in the corpus and are recorded here so the work starts from something rather than from nothing.

AnchorStationWhat is already stated
Declared join11 · citThe Sky and the Weather is written as the explicit join to the Weather System and to the Cross-Reference Matrix. It is also the station most usable as a hiding place, which is why the spiritual-bypass failure is written hard there.
Named weather06 · duḥkhaPain Is Not the Problem opens on the effort-discomfort against injury-pain boundary. It is the one station that already names its weather in its first paragraph.

The remaining ten are open, and should be filled by reading each station and asking which of the nineteen it actually opens — the same discipline as everywhere else in the library. Not by pairing them for symmetry. Twelve stations and nineteen weathers will not map cleanly, and a station that opens four weathers while another opens none is information rather than a defect.

Method

Provenance and current state

Same rule as the companion document. A mark means the ring is named in that station's sixth section. Dissent is recorded as dissent, not as presence. Absence by disagreement is recorded separately from absence by silence, because they mean opposite things about a tradition.

Current resolution. Four rows are complete and four findings are carried in full from the original build. The remaining cells are drawn open, pending re-extraction against the thirteen Not Two documents. Unlike the emotion grid, no column totals were recorded for this one, so there is no arithmetic to check the extraction against — the totals will be produced by the pass rather than confirmed by it.

To finish the atlasExtract §VI from Not Two 01–12 and §X from the Weather System 01–19 in the same pass. Both grids resolve together, the column swap can be verified rather than asserted, and the station–weather join can be drafted against real citations.

Using it

What an atlas is for

The Cross-Reference Matrix is for a reader with a problem. This document is not. It is for whoever is deciding what the library builds next, and it answers one question: where is the corpus thin, and is it thin because the material is missing or because the index is.

It is also the document to hand anyone asking what the library actually is. Three bodies of work, twelve rings, fifty-odd long-form articles and a set of grids that do not quite agree with each other is a harder thing to describe than it is to show, and the two grids in this pair show it in about a minute.

Three answers on the current evidence. The Heroic and Running Road rings are written but under-cited — an index problem. The Odyssey ring is written and uncited — a structural index problem. The unaffiliated sources gathered under Other are a material problem, and the question they raise is whether they amount to a twelfth ring nobody has written.

None of the three is a writing problem. The material for all of it is on the page already, in documents that took months. What is missing is the half-day of citation work that would let a reader find it, which is the cheapest unbuilt thing in the whole corpus.

The turn

Fourteen rings, four unreachable

Four rings are written and cited nowhere, and three of the four were finished in the same month this document was revised. That is what happens when a library grows faster than its index, and it is fixable in an afternoon of citation work rather than a year of writing.

The material is there. It is the joins that are missing, and joins are cheap.
