Strength work is now perhaps a tenth to a fifth of a rower’s training time, and most programs default, without much thought, to traditional power-sport lifting. But the recent evidence leans quietly toward functional strength for rowing — larger, more transferable gains, at a gentler cost to the body.
The aim was never to lift the most. It is to lift what becomes boat speed. In collegiate rowers, vertical jump was the single best predictor of 500m time-trial pace — and that explosive power is built by functional movement, not by maximal singles.
Both roads build strength. But functional training does it with fewer injuries and a closer likeness to rowing itself — developing an athleticism the boat can use rather than a maximal load it cannot.

Traditional powerlifting builds real strength too. But for a rower choosing where limited off-water time should go, the sport-specific and the safer is the quieter, wiser bet.
