Preparing the state before the start

Flow need not be left to chance. It can be quietly prepared. This protocol gathers nine evidence-based techniques across four phases, each settling arousal, attention and readiness a little further. The return is large: flow has been associated with performance gains of 200 to 500 percent across athletic domains.

Regulate, then prime

The first two phases settle the nervous system. Arousal regulation brings the body into its quiet, optimal band; visualization wakes, ahead of time, the very movement programs the performance will ask for.

Mental priming

Drill the state, then call it

The second half moves from preparation to performance: drills at the challenge–skill edge, then a trigger that turns the whole primed system into action when it is needed.

PHASE 3 · 12 MIN

Physical flow drills

Sport-specific drills at 85–95% effort, held near 4% above skill — rehearsing the state under real load, so it is there when it counts.
