It is also counterfactual to its core. The intensity of relief is set by how vividly you can imagine the bad outcome that did not occur — which is why a narrow escape produces far more of it than a comfortable success, and why the athlete who was genuinely afraid feels more relief than the one who was confident, having achieved exactly the same result.
Relief’s physiology is the reverse of every storm in this series, and it arrives faster than athletes expect.
Cortisol and adrenaline fall away, often steeply. Parasympathetic activity rebounds. Heart rate drops, muscles that had been holding tone release — which is why athletes describe their legs going, or find they cannot stand comfortably, immediately after a decisive result. The counterfactual research supplies the mechanism. Relief is generated by comparison with an imagined worse outcome — the downward counterfactual — which is the same machinery that made bronze medallists appear happier than silver medallists. The intensity of relief is a function of how nearly the bad thing happened, not of how good the actual result was.
The stress-recovery literature supplies the physiology. The steep decline in stress hormones following a sustained demand, and the associated transient dip in immune function afterwards, are well documented in the broader psychoneuroimmunology work. The practical implication for athletes — heightened illness risk in the days after a major competitive effort — is consistent enough to plan around.
What is not well established, and should not be overstated, is a formal sport-psychology account of the letdown effect. The pattern is universally recognized by coaches — the flat performance after a peak result — and it is under-researched as a discrete phenomenon. What exists is the goal literature: attainment of a salient goal reliably reduces subsequent effort until a new goal is established, which is the most defensible explanation available.
The honest summary is that relief’s physiology is well understood, its emotional mechanism is well understood, and its specific competitive consequences rest more on convergent reasoning and coaching observation than on direct study.
The most famous story in the history of endurance sport is, read properly, a story about relief — and about what happens to a body that holds itself together exactly long enough.
The tradition, as it came down through Lucian and others, holds that a runner named Pheidippides ran from the plain of Marathon to Athens carrying news of the victory over the Persians. He arrived, delivered the message — in the usual telling, a single word: rejoice, we conquer — and immediately collapsed and died.
The historical record is contested and worth stating honestly. Herodotus, writing closest to the events, describes a runner sent to Sparta before the battle, over a far greater distance, and says nothing about a death. The Marathon-to-Athens story appears in later sources. What survives is a tradition rather than an established fact.
But traditions survive because they capture something true, and this one captures the structure of relief exactly. The body held together for precisely as long as the task required it — through the battle, through the run, through the message — and let go the instant the threat was discharged. Not before. Not one word before.
Every athlete has experienced a smaller version of that. The mobilization holds through the final, through the last effort, through the finish — and then the legs go, and something that has been sustained for months comes apart in seconds. The goal was never the sport. It was the discharge of a threat, and threats do not sustain anyone once removed.
The qualifier drop — performance falling in the round after a hard-won one is the classic signature. Threat-shaped goals — listen for goals framed as avoidance (not getting cut, not letting them down, proving them wrong) rather than as attainment; these discharge at the wrong moment by design. The flat week — unexplained heaviness in the seven days after a peak result, often with illness. The post-goal void — ask what happens the day after the goal is achieved; if the answer is blank, relief is doing the aiming.
Relief is neither a virtue nor a fault. It is a mechanism, and almost all of its cost comes from arriving unscheduled.

Relief cannot be prevented and should not be. The entire protocol is about deciding where it happens, so that it lands after the job rather than inside it.

Before: write down the exact moment you are holding yourself together for, and check whether your goal is framed as reaching something or escaping something — rewrite it if it is the second. Also write the next objective now, while the current one is still live. After, days 1–3: reduced load, no significant decisions, extra sleep; expect the exhale and the flatness. Days 4–7: light structured work only, and note honestly how much you had been carrying. Days 8–14: return to the plan against the objective you set in advance, not one invented in the void.

The Stoic contribution is the premeditatio, which flattens the counterfactual that relief runs on. An athlete who has already rehearsed the bad outcome does not experience the escape from it as a violent discharge, because it was never being held at full intensity.
And the Zen reading is the plainest: chop wood, carry water — before, and after. The traditions are unanimous that the day after the great result is an ordinary day requiring ordinary attention, and that expecting it to feel like anything else is where the trouble begins.
