Excitement is the clearest demonstration in this whole series that a body state does not determine an emotion. The appraisal does.
Put an athlete at a start line and measure them: heart rate elevated, adrenaline circulating, breathing quickened, attention sharpened, muscles primed. That description fits an excited athlete and a frightened one equally well. The physiological overlap between excitement and anxiety is close enough that athletes routinely mislabel one as the other — and the label, not the arousal, is what predicts what happens next.
What separates them is the direction of the appraisal. Anxiety reads the arousal as evidence of threat: something bad may happen and I may not cope. Excitement reads the identical signal as evidence of opportunity: something significant is about to happen and I am ready for it. One produces avoidance and bracing; the other produces approach and engagement.
Anticipation is excitement with the object still in the future, and it runs on a different neural currency than the moment itself. The dopamine system responds far more strongly to the expectation of a reward than to its delivery — which is why the week before a major competition often carries more charge than the medal ceremony, and why athletes describe the build-up as the part they miss most after retiring.
Excitement runs on the pursuit half of the reward system, and that distinction explains most of its behaviour in sport.
Dopamine is often described as the pleasure chemical, which is misleading. It is far more accurately the chemistry of wanting and pursuing — it spikes on anticipation and cues rather than on consumption. This is why the approach to a competition can feel more alive than the competition itself, and why the emptiest moment in many athletic careers arrives immediately after the biggest win.
The accompanying profile is adrenaline-driven and approach-oriented: elevated heart rate and respiration, mobilized fuel, sharpened attention, and — unlike fear — no peripheral shutdown. The hands stay warm. Fine motor control is largely preserved, which is the single most important physiological difference between excitement and fear, and the reason excitement is usable in precision sports where fear is not.
Its cost is temporal rather than qualitative. Excitement pushes tempo. It shortens preparation phases, accelerates rhythm, and produces the fast first minute. In a sport with a pacing requirement, that is the whole bill: not a worse athlete, but a correctly capable athlete arriving too early and paying for it in the last quarter.
Peripheral shutdown, cold hands, narrowed visual field, degraded fine motor control. The body prepares to flee or fight, which is poor preparation for anything requiring touch or wide perception.
Similar heart rate and adrenaline, no peripheral shutdown, hands warm, field open, fine control preserved. Same mobilization, aimed forward — which is why it costs so little and returns so much.
Excitement does not make an athlete worse. It makes them early.
The reappraisal finding at the centre of this article is one of the most replicated and most immediately usable results in the whole emotion literature.
Brooks tested the standard advice directly. Participants facing stressful tasks — singing in front of others, a maths test, public speaking — were instructed either to say I am calm or I am excited. Those who reappraised their arousal as excitement outperformed those who tried to calm down, across all three tasks. The instruction takes one second, requires no training, and beats the advice every coach has been giving for a century.
The mechanism is that the two instructions differ in difficulty rather than in wisdom. Moving from high arousal to low arousal is a large physiological shift that cannot be executed on demand; moving from high-arousal-negative to high-arousal-positive is a reinterpretation, and reinterpretation is something the mind can actually do in the available time.
The output evidence supports the same direction. In Rathschlag and Memmert’s experiments, self-generated happiness produced significantly better physical performance than a neutral state and substantially better than anxiety or sadness — on finger force, jump height and throw velocity. Pleasant activating states are not merely more comfortable to compete in; they measurably raise physical output.
And the individuality caveat from Hanin’s IZOF work applies here as strongly as anywhere: the level of excitement that sharpens one athlete over-revs another. There is an optimal band, it differs between people, and it is discoverable.
The ancient Greeks took the fast start so seriously that they built a punishment into the stadium for it, and the arrangement tells you everything about how old this problem is.
The starting line of the stadion at Olympia was a stone sill grooved for the toes, with a mechanical gate — the hysplex — rigged with cords and torsion so that barriers dropped simultaneously in front of every runner. It was an elaborate engineering solution to a purely emotional problem: athletes, standing on the most important line of their lives, could not reliably wait.
And the deterrent was not subtle. The Hellanodikai, the judges, carried rods, and a runner who broke before the gate could be flogged for it in front of the assembled Greek world. Whatever one thinks of the method, note what it concedes: the Greeks did not believe athletes would master their own anticipation. They assumed the excitement would win unless something external held the line.
The runners were not cowards or amateurs. They were the best in the known world, and they were undone at the moment of maximum readiness by the same physiology that made them ready. Excitement at the line is not a modern weakness produced by television and money. It is the oldest recorded failure mode in organized sport.
The lesson is not that eagerness is bad — the Greeks did not think that either. It is that excitement requires a container. They built one out of torsion cords and the threat of a rod. An athlete now builds one out of a plan, and it works on exactly the same principle: something decided in advance, holding the line that the feeling will not hold on its own.
Excitement announces itself. Its quiet form does not feel like excitement at all — it feels like being unable to settle, and it spends the athlete before the event arrives.
Restlessness is anticipation with nowhere to discharge. In the days before a significant competition, the athlete is carrying a mobilized body and no outlet for it, and the energy leaks: extra sessions that were not on the plan, tinkering with equipment, rearranging the taper, conversations rehearsed, sleep that will not come at the usual hour. None of it registers as excitement. It registers as being busy.
The cost is that the taper is quietly undone. The entire logic of a taper is accumulating freshness — and a restless athlete spends that freshness on activity that produces nothing, arriving at the start line having already competed for four days in their own head. Coaches see the outcome and rarely see the cause, because the athlete honestly reports having done the prescribed work.
Its other signature is over-preparation. The kit checked six times, the plan revised the night before, a new technique adopted in the final week. Each of these is restlessness looking for a job, and each of them measurably raises risk in the days when nothing should change.
Unplanned activity — extra sessions, extra volume, or unusual busyness appearing during a taper. Late changes — equipment, technique or plan revisions in the final week are almost always restlessness rather than judgment. Sleep-onset shift without worry — difficulty falling asleep in the absence of any reported anxiety; the body is mobilized with nowhere to go. Rehearsal talk — repeatedly describing how the race will go, to anyone available. Ask directly: what have you done this week that was not on the plan?
Excitement has the best cost-to-benefit ratio of any activating state on the map, and one failure mode that is entirely predictable and therefore entirely preventable.
The failure is always temporal. Excitement does not degrade skill, narrow perception, or corrupt judgment the way the storms do. It simply arrives early and moves fast, and in any sport with a pacing structure that single property is expensive enough to lose a race.
The over-revved start — the first five hundred metres that mortgage the last five hundred. Preparation phases shorten and tempo accelerates. In its anticipatory form it spends the taper on activity that produces nothing, and it drives late changes in the week when nothing should change.
Full mobilization without fear’s costs: warm hands, open visual field, fine control preserved. It raises physical output measurably, sustains attention without effort, and it is the most pleasant state to compete in — which matters, because athletes repeat what they enjoy.
Excitement is pleasant, so athletes rarely monitor it — which is precisely why its cost arrives unexamined.
If the agreed plan starts to feel too slow while you are standing still, that is excitement, and the plan is right.
Excitement is never suppressed — it is the best fuel available. The protocol keeps all of it and caps its one dangerous property, which is the tempo.
Days 1–3: identify your optimal band — recall three excellent performances and three over-revved ones, and rate the excitement level of each. The band is usually narrower and lower than athletes expect. Days 4–7: practise the reappraisal before every session so it is reflexive rather than deliberate by the time it matters. Days 8–10: rehearse the opening numbers at exactly the planned pace while deliberately generating excitement beforehand — this trains executing a plan that feels too slow. Days 11–13: run a full pre-competition routine with the deceleration cue and the pre-start discharge effort. Day 14: review — in the rehearsals, how much faster than plan did the first minute go? That number is your correction.
The coaching instinct with an excited athlete is to settle them down. That is usually the wrong intervention, and it discards a genuine resource to solve a problem that has a cheaper fix.
Excitement is not the problem; the pacing is. An athlete told to calm down loses the mobilization and frequently gains anxiety about being over-excited — two costs to fix one. An athlete given firm, pre-committed opening numbers keeps everything excitement offers and loses only the fast first minute.
The second job is the taper. Restless athletes will fill a taper with activity if nothing else is provided, so provide something: a light structured schedule, a defined job each day, and an explicit ban on late changes. The freshness the taper is meant to accumulate is otherwise spent on nothing.
Excitement is the one weather the traditions worry about least and prepare for most — their concern is never the energy, always the timing.
The Confucian answer is the most directly applicable: ritual, li, as the container for feeling. The pre-competition routine exists precisely so that the right form holds when the state is elevated — the athlete does not have to decide anything while excited, because the sequence was decided when they were not.
The Taoist contribution is the pacing insight. Wu wei is action without forcing, and the over-revved start is forcing in its purest form — energy spent against the structure of the event rather than with it. The Tao Te Ching’s observation that nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished, is a description of correct pacing before it is anything else.
The Sufi ring names the mechanism in tawakkul. Excitement is largely anticipation of an outcome, and the grip on the outcome is what drives the athlete out too fast. Tie the camel, then release the rope, and the first minute settles on its own.
And the Stoics supply the discipline of the plan. The pre-commitment is theirs: decide with a clear mind what the aroused mind will be asked to execute, and treat the decision as already made rather than as a proposal to be reconsidered at the line.
Excitement is anxiety’s physiology with the opposite appraisal: the same elevated heart rate and circulating adrenaline, read as opportunity rather than threat. And the differences that follow are decisive — no peripheral shutdown, warm hands, an open visual field, fine motor control preserved. It is the most usable arousal an athlete has.
The evidence is unusually actionable. Saying I am excited outperformed saying calm down across singing, maths and public speaking — because relabelling is something the mind can do in a second, and lowering arousal is not. Self-generated happiness raised physical output on force, jump and throw. And the optimal band is individual: the level that sharpens one athlete over-revs another.
So keep all of it and cap the one thing that costs. Name it deliberately, hand the pacing to a plan made in advance by a calmer version of yourself, discharge the surplus before the line, decelerate one visible thing, and ban late changes. Watch for restlessness — the quiet form that never feels like excitement, spends a taper on unplanned activity, and arrives at the start line having already competed for four days. The Greeks understood this exactly: they did not ask their athletes to master anticipation. They built a gate.
