The best modern definition of boredom is not about the task at all. It is about attention — and it explains why the same session can be unbearable on Tuesday and absorbing on Thursday.
Eastwood and colleagues define boredom as the aversive experience of wanting, but being unable, to engage in satisfying activity. Note the structure: the person wants to be engaged. Boredom is not apathy or indifference; it is a failure of engagement experienced by someone who would rather be engaged. That frustrated wanting is what makes it unpleasant.
Two things reliably produce it, and they need opposite responses. The first is attentional: the athlete cannot hold engagement, because the task is under-demanding, over-demanding, or surrounded by distraction. The second is value: the athlete does not believe the activity matters. An athlete unconvinced that a drill serves any purpose will be bored by it regardless of how well designed it is, and no amount of variety will fix a meaning problem.
Missing that distinction is the standard coaching error. A coach who responds to every complaint of boredom by adding novelty is treating an attention problem — and if the real issue is that the athlete cannot see why the session exists, the novelty buys about a week. Meanwhile an athlete who genuinely needs a harder constraint gets a motivational speech about purpose.
Boredom is the lowest-arousal weather on the map, and its real expense is not what it does to the body but what it charges the will.
The physiological picture is one of non-optimal arousal — usually under-arousal, with a dopamine signal that has fallen because nothing is being predicted or pursued. The seeking system idles. Attention loosens from the task and the mind wanders, which is why time perception distorts and a twenty-minute piece feels like an hour.
The important finding is what happens next. Boredom generates a powerful urge to do something else, and staying with the task means overriding that urge continuously. Boredom and self-control are tightly coupled: persisting in a monotonous session is an ongoing act of self-regulation, and self-regulation is metabolically and psychologically expensive. Boredom proneness and trait self-control run strongly inverse.
This reframes what athletes experience in long steady sessions. The fatigue reported in the third hour of an ultra-endurance event, or the ninetieth minute of a technical drill, is frequently not physical at all — it is the accumulated cost of repeatedly declining the urge to disengage. Boredom does not merely accompany that fatigue. It manufactures a substantial part of it.
The task does not hold attention — too easy, too hard, or too surrounded by distraction. Dopamine falls, the mind wanders, time dilates. The body is available and the attention is not.
The task holds no perceived worth. Arousal may be perfectly adequate; the athlete simply will not invest attention in something they cannot see the point of. No amount of variety touches this one.
The third hour of an ultra is rarely a leg problem. It is the price of declining, several thousand times, the urge to do something else.
Boredom in sport was almost unstudied until recently, and the work that now exists is unusually direct about its cost.
A multi-method study of athletes catalogued where boredom actually comes from, and the ranking is instructive. Repetitive tasks accounted for the largest share of incidents, followed by anticipated negative mood, teammates showing a lack of interest, enforced waiting, and a lack of competitiveness or clear goals. Most of that list is structural rather than personal — it describes how training is organized, not who the athlete is. The same study reported a substantial negative effect of boredom on performance.
The trait side is more surprising. Boredom proneness in athletes predicts self-assessed decision errors — and specifically regrets in both directions, for having taken too many risks and for having been too passive. That pattern points at noisy self-regulation rather than a simple bias toward thrill-seeking. Boredom-prone athletes do not consistently do one wrong thing; they choose inconsistently.
And the finding that matters most for development: higher boredom proneness was associated with lower skill levels across every sport sampled. Skill acquisition requires large volumes of repetition, and repetition is precisely what boredom-prone athletes find hardest to tolerate. The relationship is probably bidirectional, but either way it names a real developmental obstacle rather than a personality quirk.
The exercise literature closes it: boredom proneness is associated with less vigorous exercise behaviour. What athletes cannot tolerate, they eventually stop doing.
The most detailed account of training boredom ever written comes from men who spent their lives alone in small rooms in the Egyptian desert, and they gave it a name.
The fourth-century monks called it acedia — the noonday demon — and Evagrius described its arrival with the precision of someone who had watched himself go through it many times. It comes, he says, around the fourth hour and lays siege until about the eighth. It makes the sun seem barely to move, so that the day appears fifty hours long. It makes the monk look repeatedly at the window and out at the path. It suggests that his cell is a poor place, that his brothers are unsympathetic, that some other location or occupation would suit him far better.
Read that as a training document and it is uncannily familiar: the session that will not pass, the clock checked repeatedly, the sudden conviction that this programme is wrong, this squad is not serious, and a different setup would fix everything. Evagrius’s insight was that these thoughts are not conclusions. They are symptoms, produced reliably at the same point, by the state itself.
And the counsel that came down from the desert was famously plain. Abba Moses: Go, sit in your cell, and your cell will teach you everything. Not: find a better cell. Not: leave and return when you feel like it. Stay — because the state passes, and what is on the other side of it cannot be reached any other way.
The desert fathers were not glorifying tedium. They were making an empirical claim, from long observation: the noonday demon lies convincingly about the situation, and its arguments are strongest immediately before they stop.
Acute boredom is at least honest — it announces itself, and the athlete knows they are bored. Its quiet form announces nothing, because the athlete has stopped being present enough to notice.
Drift is boredom that has settled into a habit of partial attendance. The athlete is at every session and inside none of them. The reps happen, the volume accumulates, the programme is completed — and nothing is being learned, because learning requires attention and attention left some months ago. From the outside, compliance looks perfect.
It is invisible precisely because the usual markers are clean. Attendance is good. Effort, measured in watts or kilometres, is normal. What has gone is the quality of engagement inside the work, which almost nothing in a standard monitoring system captures. An athlete can drift for an entire season and appear, on every metric a coach reviews, to be training well.
The cost shows up late and as a puzzle: an athlete who has done all the work and not improved. Coaches usually respond by adding load, which is the wrong lever — the problem was never volume. And the athlete themselves often cannot explain it, because drifting does not feel like anything. It feels like the sessions going by.
The recall test — ask what specifically they worked on in the last session and what changed. Drift produces a vague answer about the session type rather than a specific answer about the work. Effort without learning — full compliance and flat technical progress across a block is drift’s clearest external signature. No questions — an athlete who has stopped asking about their own technique has usually stopped attending to it. The cue check — ask mid-session what they are currently thinking about; the honest answer is diagnostic.
Boredom is the only weather here that is sometimes a genuine signal and sometimes a doorway — and reading it wrongly costs an athlete either a season of pointless work or the state they are chasing.
The tradition and the research agree on one uncomfortable point: the discomfort immediately before absorption is indistinguishable, from the inside, from the discomfort of wasting your time. Only the diagnosis separates them.
The urge to disengage is obeyed — reps go sloppy, the plan is abandoned for a new one, and the athlete is permanently in week one of something. It manufactures fatigue that has no physical cause, drives noisy decision-making, and over years it obstructs the very repetition that skill is built from.
Held, it is the corridor to absorption — the settling that occurs when the mind stops being entertained. Heeded correctly, it is a precise report: either this challenge is mismatched, or this work has no meaning I can see. Both are worth knowing, and both are fixable.
Boredom lies about the situation and tells the truth about the state. Diagnose before you believe it.

Days 11–13: take one long monotonous session and cross it deliberately — anchor word, no clock, no music, no changes — and record what happened in the last third. Day 14: review. If the crossing produced absorption even once, you have located a doorway most athletes never find.
The athlete-boredom research points overwhelmingly at design rather than disposition: repetitive tasks, waiting, unclear goals, and disengaged teammates account for most of it — and all four are coaching decisions.
Waiting time is the most easily fixed and the most commonly ignored. Athletes standing in queues, waiting for equipment, or watching others take turns are being bored by the session plan rather than by their sport. Auditing dead time is usually the single highest-yield intervention available.
The second is meaning, and it costs nothing. An athlete who knows what a dull session is for will hold it; the same session, unexplained, produces the noonday demon on schedule. Explaining purpose is not motivational fluff — it is the direct treatment for one of the two causes.
And the hardest coaching judgment in this article: protecting the monotony that matters. Skill requires volumes of repetition, and boredom-prone athletes struggle with exactly that. Removing the repetition to keep everyone entertained solves boredom by preventing development.
Boredom is the one state the contemplative traditions studied more carefully than the modern field has, because their entire method consisted of doing the same thing repeatedly for decades.

The Zen answer is the flattest and possibly the truest: chop wood, carry water. The ordinary action, fully attended, is the practice; there is no more interesting thing that the training is secretly for. Boredom largely consists of believing otherwise.
And the Confucian mound is the developmental argument. The basket of earth is dull, the mound is built only of baskets, and stopping one basket short is your own work. Skill has no other architecture.
