The Right AmountIs Not the Middle

The doctrine of the mean is the most quoted and most misread thing Aristotle wrote. He is not recommending moderation. He is saying the right amount is different for every person and has to be found.

§I   The Call

Six pounds of food

The warm-up sheet is laminated and taped to the wall by the door. Same sheet for all eighteen of them, Saturday morning, forty minutes before the first race.

One of them comes out of it flat. One comes out of it wired and will spend the first five hundred meters trying to get back down.

Aristotle's own example is a wrestler. If ten pounds of food is too much and two is too little, the trainer does not therefore prescribe six. Six might be too little for Milo and too much for a beginner. That is the whole doctrine and almost nobody quotes that part.

Which makes the doctrine of the mean not a recommendation of moderation but a claim that there is no general answer. The right amount is per person and per situation, and finding the particular one is the whole skill. It is also why a laminated sheet for eighteen athletes is wrong on arithmetic rather than on principle.

§II   Two Failures

The two ways this goes wrong

Reading it as moderation

The first failure is the popular version. Everything in moderation, nothing to excess. Aristotle did not say this and it contradicts the rest of him, since he thinks you should be as courageous as the situation requires, which is sometimes an extreme quantity.

Prescribing by average

The second failure is the squad-wide number. Same warm-up, same activation protocol, same pre-race routine for everyone. It is efficient and it is guaranteed to be wrong for most of the group, because the doctrine's actual claim is that the right point varies by person.

§III   The Line

Relative to us is the phrase that carries it, and it is the phrase that gets dropped in every popular summary. Without it the doctrine is a platitude about moderation. With it, it is a claim about individualization that arrived two thousand years before anyone measured it.

§IV   The Story

The story

The wrestler in the example is Milo of Croton, the most famous athlete in the Greek world, and Aristotle chooses him deliberately. Milo's correct intake would be absurd for anyone else, and nobody watching would conclude that Milo was being immoderate. He was eating the right amount.

Aristotle then complicates it in a way that is usually skipped. Some things have no mean. There is no right amount of malice, no correct quantity of betrayal. The doctrine applies to quantities that can be right, and not to categories that are wrong at any level.

And he adds the practical note that finding the mean is difficult, that it is easy to miss the target and hard to hit it, and that a person should therefore learn which side they personally err toward and lean deliberately against it. He compares it to straightening warped wood.

§V   The Science

The science

Yuri Hanin's Individual Zones of Optimal Functioning is the doctrine of the mean with data. Hanin found that the anxiety level associated with best performance varied widely between athletes, and that a fixed optimum did not exist. Some performed best at high anxiety, some at low, and the useful prediction came from an individual's own zone rather than any group value.

This displaced the inverted-U, which had proposed a single curve with a universal optimum. The inverted-U is still taught and its empirical support in sport is weak.

The finding generalizes. Optimal training load, optimal activation, optimal recovery interval, and optimal pre-competition routine all show substantial between-athlete variance, and the group mean is frequently a value that suits nobody.

§VI   The Case Against

The case against the doctrine of the mean

The standard philosophical objection is that the doctrine is empty, and it has force.

It gives no method

The right amount is the right amount for you in this situation. True, and it supplies no procedure for finding it. Critics from Kant onward have pointed out that the doctrine names the target without providing any way to locate it, which makes it a description of what a good decision looks like after the fact rather than guidance before it.

His answer is that the mean is determined as the person of practical wisdom would determine it, which relocates the problem rather than solving it. Station 06 has to carry the weight, and station 06's own case-against section says that practical wisdom cannot be verified from the inside either.

Individualization has a cost

In practice, telling coaches that everything is individual can produce paralysis or an excuse. Group protocols exist because they are tractable, and a squad of forty cannot be individualized on every variable. The honest version is that some variables repay individualization heavily and others do not, and the doctrine cannot tell you which.

Where this leaves the station Kept as a warning rather than a method. Its value is that it stops a coach prescribing the average and stops an athlete assuming their optimum matches the group's. The finding of the individual point is empirical work, done by recording, and the doctrine contributes the knowledge that the work is necessary.

§VII   The Practice

The practice

  • Find which side you err toward. Aristotle's warped wood. Almost everyone is systematically off in one direction and knowing which is worth more than knowing the target.
  • Lean against it deliberately. If you consistently overcook the warm-up, aim short. You will land closer to right than if you aim at right.
  • Record your own zone. Two columns: how activated you felt before, how it went. Twenty entries and the pattern is usually obvious and frequently not what you assumed.
  • Ignore the group value. Especially for activation and pre-competition routine, where the between-athlete variance is largest.
  • Know which things have no mean. Some behaviors are not quantities to be optimized. The doctrine does not apply to them and pretending it does is how it gets misused.

§VIII   The Deeper Block

Two weeks

Days 1–2
Name one variable. Activation, warm-up length, pre-race food, whatever you suspect you get wrong. One.
Days 3–5
Rate and record. Before each session, your level on a simple scale. Afterward, how it went. Nothing else.
Days 6–8
Deliberately go low once and high once. The zone cannot be found from the middle of your usual range.
Days 9–11
Look for the direction of your error. Not the optimum yet. Which side you sit on relative to your best days.
Days 12–14
Lean against it. Aim deliberately off-center in the corrective direction and see whether you land closer.

§IX   For the Coach

For the coach

Stop prescribing activation by squad. This is the clearest applied finding from Hanin and it is still routinely ignored. The pre-race talk that lifts half the boat flattens the other half.

Ask each athlete which side they err toward. Most know, and almost none have been asked. It takes one conversation and it is more useful than any questionnaire.

Individualize the few variables that repay it. Activation, warm-up length, recovery interval. Do not attempt everything.

§X   The Turn

What this station leaves you with

Ten pounds is too much and two is too little, and the trainer does not prescribe six. That is the doctrine, and the part everybody quotes is the part Aristotle spent the least time on.
