Ask athletes to describe their finest performance and a strange consistency appears. Almost none of them describe themselves. They describe the thing happening.
The Sufi term is fana — passing away. It names the fading of the ego-self, the dissolving of the separate, self-narrating "I" that ordinarily stands slightly apart from experience, commenting on it. In the tradition, what remains afterward is called baqa: subsistence, a return to ordinary life carrying something of what was found.
This is not a loss of skill or awareness. Perception in these moments is usually reported as heightened, not dimmed. What goes missing is specifically the observer — the part that monitors how you are doing, imagines how you look, and keeps a running account of whether this is going well.
Athletes describe the same disappearance constantly and rarely have a word for it. The boat rowing itself. The shot going in before it was aimed. No sense of time passing. The tradition’s contribution is to say: this is a known state, it has a shape, and there are conditions under which it becomes more likely.
The observer is expensive. It costs attention, it costs timing, and under pressure it costs precisely the skills that took longest to build.
Well-learned movement runs best when it runs without deliberate supervision. Attend consciously to a skill that has become automatic — the mechanics of your own stroke, the exact release of the shot — and you interrupt the very automaticity that made it good. Researchers call this reinvestment. Athletes call it choking, and it happens most under exactly the conditions where the observer grows loudest.
And the observer grows loudest when the stakes rise, when a crowd appears, when a result matters. This is the cruel arrangement of competitive sport: the moments that most need an absent self are the moments that most reliably summon one.
The Sufi framing helps here because it does not ask the athlete to fight the self, which is another form of self-attention. It asks instead for absorption in something large enough that the self has nothing to do. Attention that is fully occupied elsewhere has none left over for self-monitoring.
Conscious attention returns to a movement that had become automatic. Timing degrades, the action stiffens, and the athlete performs a worse version of a skill they genuinely own. The harder they try to control it, the worse it gets.
Attention rests on the task, the target, the rhythm — anywhere but the self. The trained movement is left alone to do what it has been trained to do, and it usually does it well.
Modern flow research arrived, by an entirely different route, at a description that overlaps the Sufi account almost point for point.
Among the classical dimensions of flow is the loss of self-consciousness — the fading of concern about how one appears, alongside merged action and awareness, altered time perception, and a sense of effortlessness. Read a list of flow’s components beside a classical description of fana and the correspondence is difficult to miss.
Neuroscience offers a plausible mechanism in the idea that regions supporting self-referential processing and deliberate self-monitoring quiet down during deeply absorbed performance. Whether or not any particular model holds up, the phenomenon it points at is one athletes report with great consistency.
The practical value of the convergence is simple. Two independent traditions — one a thousand years of contemplative practice, the other a few decades of measurement — agree that the vanishing of the self-monitor is central to peak performance, and that it cannot be forced. That agreement is worth taking seriously.
Attar’s parable of the moths and the flame is the tradition’s teaching on the difference between knowing about a thing and knowing it from inside.
The moths gather at night, wondering what the candle’s light truly is. The first flies to the palace window, looks at the flame, and returns to describe it — bright, dancing, distant. The assembly rules that he knows nothing. The second flies closer, feels the heat on his wings, is singed and driven back. He knows more, they agree — and still not the thing itself.
The third moth enters the flame. He does not return with a description, because he has become what he sought to describe. And Attar’s assembly draws the conclusion the whole parable was built for: only the one who no longer stands apart from the thing truly knows it — and he is precisely the one who can no longer report.
Athletes should read this as a map of their own best nights, not as a call to self-destruction. The performance watched from inside your own commentary is the first moth. The performance you grip and fight is the second. The one where you disappeared into the doing — where afterward you could not narrate the middle thousand metres — that was the third, and everyone who has been there knows it was the truest one.
The disappearance of the self-monitor is not just reported by athletes and mystics. It has a measurable signature.
Dietrich’s transient-hypofrontality account of flow proposes that during intense, absorbed performance, the prefrontal machinery of explicit self-monitoring is down-regulated — taken partially offline — while well-learned motor programs run from deeper, faster systems. Related work on the brain’s default-mode network, the seat of self-referential chatter, shows it quieting during deep task absorption. The observer does not merely feel absent. It is, functionally, off duty.
The performance case for keeping it off duty is among the most replicated in motor science. Wulf’s external-focus research shows, across dozens of studies, that attention aimed at the effect of the movement — the target, the water, the implement — outperforms attention aimed at the body producing it, in accuracy, efficiency, and retention. And Masters’ reinvestment work shows the reverse gear: under pressure, athletes who turn conscious control back onto automated skill break it — the mechanism of choking.
Read together, the literature says what the moths said: the self-monitoring observer is not the performer’s friend, and its quieting is not a loss of control but a transfer of control to the systems that were trained for the job.
You cannot delete the observer by force — the attempt is just more self-attention. You can, however, occupy attention so completely that the observer has no material to work with.
Every practice below works the same way: it gives attention a real, external, present-tense job. The self does not get argued out of existence. It simply runs out of things to narrate.
Fana is not something you do. It is what is left when the self has nothing left to do.
You cannot practice disappearing. You can practice the attentional habits that make disappearance likely — a two-week block of aiming attention relentlessly outward.
Every drill keeps its normal content. The only change is where attention is aimed while it happens.
If a technical fault genuinely needs internal work, fix it in an isolated drill — then translate the fix back to an external cue before it re-enters the whole movement.
The coach controls the two levers that most reliably summon or dismiss the observer: the direction of the cues, and the design of the pressure.
Cue outward, always, in the whole movement. Internal cues have their place in isolated technical work, but in integrated performance they aim the athlete’s attention at exactly the machinery that runs best unsupervised. And retire the instruction “relax” — it is an internal-state command that has never once produced relaxation at a start line.
Then design pressure that occupies rather than exposes. Pressure drills that add an audience and a consequence while giving attention nowhere to go simply feed the observer. Pressure drills built around a demanding external task — a target, a constraint, a game — inoculate: the stakes rise, but attention already has a job. The athlete learns, rep by rep, that the way through being watched is to be busy watching something else.
Audience plus consequence plus nothing to attend to. The observer takes the vacant seat, and the drill trains self-consciousness under load.
The same audience and consequence — wrapped around an external task hard enough to hold attention. The drill trains absorption under load, which is the transferable skill.
Fana names the passing away of the self-monitoring “I” — the commentator that watches you perform, imagines how you look, and consumes the attention the task needs. Its disappearance is one of the most consistently reported features of peak performance, in the contemplative record and the research literature alike.
It cannot be forced, because forcing is more self-attention. It can only be invited — by aiming attention outward, holding one cue, serving something larger than yourself, and stopping the checking. Occupy attention completely, and the observer simply runs out of work.
