§I The Call
The alarm goes at half four and the session is at half five and the drive is fifteen minutes. She lies there. The kettle goes on at ten to. She stands in the kitchen with the phone in one hand while it boils.
Twenty-five minutes, most mornings, deciding something that was decided in September.
Across a season that is about a hundred hours.
Zerizut is usually translated as alacrity or promptness, and the Mussar tradition treats it as foundational rather than admirable. The Ramchal places it early in the ladder of Mesillat Yesharim for a reason: laziness is not mainly a failure to act, it is a talent for producing reasons, and the reasons arrive in the gap.
Twenty-five minutes a day is about a hundred hours a season spent producing reasons rather than acting. The station's claim is that the reasons are not the problem and cannot be argued with, because most of them are true. The gap is the problem.
| Arena | What it looks like there |
|---|---|
| Swimming | Twenty-five minutes of deciding something already decided. |
| Rehab | The exercises that take six minutes and are approached for forty. |
| Coaching | The email, the conversation, the call, all of them pending for weeks. |
| Writing | The hour before starting, every day, for years. |
| Any arena | The distance between the decision and the first action. |
§II Two Failures
The first failure is waiting to feel ready. The tradition's position, and the research's, is that the state follows the action rather than preceding it, and that waiting for readiness is waiting for something that arrives after you start.
The second failure is the one this station is most often used to justify. Speed for its own sake, moving fast to avoid thinking, starting immediately on whatever is nearest. Zerizut is promptness on the thing you decided, and it is not a general recommendation of hurry. The Ramchal distinguishes them explicitly.
§III The Line
Before it has spoken. The mechanism is temporal rather than motivational. The reasons are good and they take a few seconds to assemble, and acting inside that window is a different task from defeating them once they exist.
§IV The Story
The Ramchal treats laziness at length and his analysis is unusually psychological. He observes that the lazy person does not say no. They say later, and they produce a reason, and the reason is frequently correct. The rain is real. The tiredness is real. He is clear that the reasons are not lies, which is exactly what makes them effective.
His remedy is not to refute them. It is to establish the action so firmly in the schedule that the moment of deciding never arrives, which is the same conclusion the modern behavior literature reaches by another route.
Salanter added the observation that this is easier in company, and that the group meeting at a fixed hour removes the decision entirely from the individual, which is why so much of the practice was structured around fixed times with other people.
§V The Science
Piers Steel's meta-analysis of procrastination identified task aversiveness, delay to reward, impulsiveness and low expectancy as the main predictors, and found that procrastination is better modeled as a temporal discounting problem than as a character defect. The reward is far and the discomfort is near.
Implementation intentions, from the Aristotle ring, are the best supported remedy, and the mechanism fits the Ramchal's exactly: specifying the cue and the response in advance removes the moment where the reasons get produced.
The action-precedes-motivation finding comes from the behavioral activation literature. Scheduled activity produces changes in state, and waiting for the state before acting is the pattern the treatment is designed to interrupt.
§VI The Case Against
Two serious objections, and one of them is a safety issue.
Reluctance to train can be the first sign of non-functional overreaching, illness, or a load problem, exactly as in the Desert Fathers ring at station 05. A station that teaches athletes to move before the reluctance has spoken is teaching them to bypass a signal that is sometimes the most important information available that morning.
The tradition has no version of this problem. Its authors were not managing training loads.
Immediate compliance, no hesitation, do it now. That is the texture of environments where athletes do not raise problems, and adding a classical virtue to it is not neutral.
Station 07 of the Desert Fathers ring installs a deliberate delay on reversible decisions. This station removes delay. Both are correct in their domain and the domains have to be separated: promptness applies to what has already been decided and never to the deciding.
§VII The Practice
§VIII The Deeper Block
§IX For the Coach
Remove decisions from the schedule. Fixed times, fixed places, a person expecting them. Every decision you remove is one an athlete does not have to win at half four.
Never use this as a compliance vocabulary. No hesitation is not a virtue in a program where athletes need to be able to raise things.
Teach the check before the practice. An athlete who has learned to override reluctance without checking load is one you will meet again with a different problem.
“How long between the alarm and the car. That is the number we are working on. Not the session.”
§X The Turn
The reasons are not lies. That is the Ramchal's actual observation and it is what makes the ordinary advice useless. You cannot argue your way past a true statement about the rain.
What you can do is arrange a morning where the argument never gets held.
